Steam Summer Sale 2014 + Other Finds

PC gamers know that you don’t have to wait long for great deals on games to show up. New releases get prices cuts often months before their console counterparts.

Steam and GOG are two popular markets for PC games, and both hold pretty awesome sales on an annual basis – the Summer Sale.

Now I haven’t been active on steam in a while, so they’ve got these trading cards which can be ‘crafted’ into badges once you complete a set, which are based around site events or games. This year, the summer sale has set that is available for a limited time only. I managed to get 8 out of the 10 cards, but there was a problem. Thanks to my tremendous luck, the restrictions that Steam places on accounts that have not been active (I haven’t been on since the last big sale) I cannot trade for or buy the two cards I need from other users to complete the set, essentially making my effort worthless. I did get some good deals, but I have also learned my lesson – log in to Steam on a regular basis so I don’t miss out next time. Total cost to ‘buy’ the cards? About $.30 – this is high stakes stuff folks!

My loss (an almost complete TC set to craft a badge):

My finds:

  • Rayman collection – $9.50 for Rayman 1 – 3 and Origins
  • Civ V Brave New World Expansion + All additional maps and Civs – $17
  • Metro 2033 – $3
  • Metro Last Light Complete – $7
  • Borderlands 2 GOTY – $10
  • Skyrim Complete – $14
  • Castle Crashers + DLC = $2.50

Total Spent: ~$60

Total Saved ~$80

I can’t complain, but my video game budget is wearing thin. Still planning on a Wii U before the end of summer, but it will have to wait for now.

Abraham Lincoln in Escape from L.A.

Found this on tumblr, I’m sure it is as old as dirt but it’s new to me and I LOVE it. Huge Escape fan, still hoping that Snake Plissken gets back on the silver screen soon. John Carpenter has said that it was originally intended to be a trilogy, with Escape from Earth being the finale.

Here’s to hoping, and I will attempt to recreate a $5 bill like this soon!

Fungus colony in vivarium

Over the past three days I have observed a strange and pretty cool phenomena – the rise of a colony of mushrooms in my vivarium.

I have been keeping my frogs and toads in a vivarium of various shapes, sizes, and iterations for the past three years, but the only ‘alien life’ that I have encountered before this week has been limited to the occasional mold and fruit flies.

Getting a true fungus to grow in captivity is a sign of a health micro-ecosystem, and now that the caps have fully opened, these mushrooms won’t be around for long, returning to the substrate where they will regroup and possibly return another day.

Toadstools for my toads? Hilarious. It shocked me when they initially appeared because it all happened in a matter of hours!
